 A Spectacular Evening of Dance
      with The Hal Schaefer Trio

On Sat. Oct. 20, 2001 at 8:00 PM, at the Southpoint Condominium, North Lounge, 3400-10 Galt Ocean Dr., the Hal Schaefer Trio will present "An Evening of Dance".

Featuring the sensational HAL SCHAEFER on keyboards, with Duffy Jackson on drums and Linc Lackey on bass. Special guest singers will treat you to wonderful vocal accompaniment from some of the greatest composers of all time.

Hal has worked with such greats as Duke Ellington, the Dorsey Brothers, Benny Carter and the Boyd Raeburn Orchestra.

His further credits include working as a director /accompanist for Peggy Lee, Vic Damone, Mitzi Gaynor, Anita Ellis, Billy Ekstine, Chita Rivera, and many others. One of Schaefer's first vocal students was Marilyn Monroe, who he quickly turned into "someone who can actually sing" and in an unprecedented move; 20th Century Fox gave Schaefer on-screen credit for this accomplishment.

Tickets are available for a donation of $25 per person. They can be obtained from the synagogue by calling (954) 561-2003. A very limited number of tickets will be available at the door.

Shul Fall Picnic

On November 4, we will be holding our Fall Picnic. A wonderful day for the entire family is promised.  Information on the picnic can be obtained by calling the synagogue at (954) 561-2003.

Congregation Golf Outing

An inaugural Congregation Amchah Golf Outing is planned for Sunday, October 14, 2001.  This is an opportunity for us to raise funds and have fun in an enjoyable outdoor environment.

If you golf, plan to play.  Get some of your friends and co-workers to play with you. This golfing event will help our Shul in its ability to serve the community.

Also consider being a  "hole sponsor" for our golf event.  For $100, a sign will be displayed throughout the day with an individual or company's name at the hole you sponsored, and also, a special acknowledgement will be made in our next issue of The Shofar.

Volunteers are needed to help run the tournament.  Please contact me at (561) 963-4355 for more information.  A flyer is included herein, with full details of the event.

Please note... per the golf course's requirements, we must receive your reply by SEPT.  30, 2001.

I look forward to seeing you at the tee!

President's Message

Shalom Fellow Congregants,

It is with great pleasure that we send you this copy of The Shofar.  Within it, you will find details of many of the special services and events we have planned.  We look forward to your participation and involvement.

I would like to point out two very special upcoming events, "An Evening of Dance" featuring The Hal Schaefer Trio, and our "First Annual Golf Outing".  Both of these events offer an excellent opportunity to welcome friends, and to raise support from the outside community.  Please invite your friends and neighbors to join us at these fun events.

It is with great favor that I welcome Steven Cardonick, our new Cantorial Soloist.  For those of you who missed our first few services, you are in for a real treat!  You may remember the excitement last Purim when Stephen led services and read the Megillah.   Steven's strong voice combined with his passion for the liturgy, presents a meaningful and spiritual experience for the Congregation.

As we approach the upcoming holiday of Sukkos, I am delighted that our members will have the opportunity to celebrate the traditions that we all grew up with. All are invited to help in building and decorating our first Synagogue Sukkah.

The Rabbi, Becky and the entire Board of Directors work hard and diligently to ensure the Synagogue's success.  We have a growing Congregation, and with such a "close-knit" membership base, everyone can get involved, even if only in some small way.  There are many Committees that need staffing.  Please let us know of any desire you may have to join one of our committees.

I end this letter reminding everyone that your financial contributions and donations go a long way.  With a small family pledge of with as little as $18 a month, we will continue to grow and offer more programs and activities for you, your family, and the community.  Take advantage of what our synagogue has to offer and be a part of our growth in the coming year.

Respectfully,   Alec M. Messeroff,

Our Rabbi is a "Winner"

Rabbi Larry Winer was invited, along with three other local area Rabbis to participate in the hit theatrical performance "Game Show" performed at Hollywood Playhouse. "Game Show" is a cross between "Who wants to be a Millionaire" and "Survivor".  Audience members are picked to play in a real TV-type game show, while watching the backstage intrigue and schemes.

Who would be picked to play on Game Show? How about our very own Rabbi, and some of our Congregation Amchah members who were selected from the audience to try their luck.

Round One - Rabbi Winer beats out the other rabbis! Round two- Nancy Messeroff shows her food and OZ trivia knowledge.  Round Three- Ruth Kaplan surpasses all the younger players with her answers.

Wow! All three Congregation Amchah contestants moved on to the final round.  We watched as all three of our members competed for the final prize.

Just goes to show you the kind of first-class people we have in our Shul...      it was a "Synagogue Sweep".

And the proud grand prize winner... Ruth Kaplan.  Congratulations Ruth !!!

Birth is a Beginning
(submitted by Shelley Glazer)

Birth is a beginning
and death a destination
and life is a journey.

From childhood to maturity,
and youth to age;
From innocence to awareness,
and ignorance to knowing;

From foolishness to discretion,
and then, perhaps, to wisdom;
From weakness to strength,
(or strength to weakness),
and, often, back again;
From health to sickness,
and back, we pray, to health again;
From offense to forgiveness,
From loneliness to love,
From joy to gratitude,
From pain to compassion,
and grief to understanding;
From fear to faith;
From defeat to defeat to defeat;
Until, looking backward or ahead,
we see that victory lies
not at some high place along the way,
But in having made the journey,
stage by stage,
A sacred pilgrimage.

Birth is a beginning,
and death a destination,

and life is a journey.

From the Rabbi’s Desk…

I recently came across a rather whimsical report entitled "The Perfect Rabbi" written by Rabbi Stanley Platek and I want to share it with you.

Results of a computer survey show that the perfect Rabbi delivers a sermon of precisely twelve minutes. He attacks sin but makes sure that no one is upset.

He works from 8:00 AM to midnight and also acts as Shammas.  He earns $100 per week, is smartly dressed, buys good books, drives a good car and gives $100 per week to charity. He is 28 years old with 30 years experience.

He is filled with a passionate desire to work with the youth and gives all of his

time and attention to the older members of the community.  The perfect Rabbi is always smiling in an earnest manner.  He has a constant feeling for humor, which helps him remain serious in his work.

He visits daily fifteen families in the community plus prisoners and invalids in hospitals.  He spends his whole time trying to attract members from amongst the uncommitted Jews and he is always in his study when he is needed.

I cannot testify as to the truth of the report but I am almost sure that the author is a Rabbi or the wife of a Rabbi.   For all the whimsicality of the description, it really does underscore, the sometimes contradictory demands and expectations that exist in the Rabbi-Congregant relationship.

This Rosh Hashanah, 5762 marked our seventh High Holiday observance as a synagogue family.

Years of challenge, excitement, joy, satisfaction, growth, and change, with so many people I am proud to call not only congregants but friends.

I know you join me in the prayer that we continue to celebrate for many years to come and together share in the achievements of this very special place - our Shul.

May you be blessed with health, happiness and prosperity in this New Year.

                     Rabbi Larry Winer
