Hal Schaefer Concert

On Sunday afternoon, May 21 we were treated to a truly spectacular show as Hal Schaefer presented a Musical Showcase featuring eight of his very talented music students. Along with Hal's accompaniment on keyboards, the audience was serenaded with some of the most beautiful voices, singing some of the greatest songs of all time.

The show began as the first soloist, Alexandra Lavelanet, sang a beautiful medley, which included the song "Over the Rainbow". She was followed by Gwen Lai who's songs included the hit "I Got Love".  The next performer, Fern Ellis, sang a beautiful rendition of  "I've Got Rhythm", and the first set closed as Anais Escobar sang "Accentuate the Positive" and "Bye, Bye Blackbird" with the audience asking for an encore.

Everyone was then treated to a lovely intermission, highlighted with finger sandwiches, iced champagne, a variety of cheeses, and dessert and coffee.

The second half began with Jim Guido singing "Close your Eyes" and "These Foolish Things".  His performance had the audience dancing in their seats. Next was Myrna Gross whose performance included "Take Me As I Am". Marilyn Goldberg followed, and her song "New York State of Mind" earned a standing ovation.  The show closed as Amanda Braverman sang a beautiful Gershwin Medley.

The Show Was Spectacular! Thank you Hal Schaefer and students for such wonderful performances, for such an enjoyable afternoon, and for such a successful fund raising event.

Spring Picnic

"A beautiful day marked by perfect weather, lots of good food, and the fun and enjoyment of our friends". That's the only way to describe our Congregation's Spring Picnic, held on May  6th at Plantation's Heritage Park.

Heritage Park offers picnic shelters surrounding a beautiful lake offering fishing, boating, and bird watching. There are many nature trails and bicycle paths, as well as numerous playgrounds and fields for kids to enjoy.

The afternoon's fun began as Rabbi Winer launched one of his colorful high-flying kites.  Other fun and frolic included softball, volleyball, a huge tug of war (the Rabbi really fell for this), and lets not forget the water balloons.

Our President, Alec fancies himself as a gourmet chef so naturally the burgers and hot dogs were grilled to perfection!

Our next picnic will be held in the fall on Nov 4th.  If you missed the last one, don't miss the next.
Check out all the wonderful photos on the photo page.

      High Holiday Contributions

The Board of Directors has adopted a two-tiered ticket pricing for the High Holidays. Tickets are available at $75 per person for Congregation Members and $125 per person for non-members.

A Member is defined as someone who attends Shabbos Services, is a financial contributor, and helps and participates in temple activities.

Congregants with limited financial resources are invited to discuss their situation with Rabbi Winer.

President's Message

Shalom Fellow Congregants,

As the summer approaches, I would like to look back on the extraordinary year gone by, and recall the outstanding times we spent together.

The year began with our observance of the High Holidays in our beautiful newly dedicated Sanctuary.  Shortly thereafter, the Rousse/Wattenberg Library was dedicated and thanks to you, our shelves began to fill.

As the year progressed, many festive holiday celebrations were shared together.  The children enjoyed latkes at our Hanukkah Party, a meaningful and delicious Passover Seder was attended by many, and let us not forget our costume Purim Festival featuring Rabbi Winer disguised as "Megillah" Gorilla.

We presented two wonderful benefit musical concerts.  The first was a jazz concert by Hal Schaefer in honor of his wife Brenda and the second an excellent afternoon with his talented students.

We all gathered for a day of "Fun in the Park" at Plantation Heritage Park at the Shul picnic.  The food was plentiful, the games were fun, the kites flew high, and everyone had a great time.

We were treated to a delightful lecture and breakfast provided by Israeli Bonds in honor of our Rebitzen Becky Winer.

As always, the year was full of learning and discovery for our children as they met with the Rabbi for ongoing Bar and Bat Mitzvah lessons.  This year proved special as we launched Continuing Education Programs for adults as well.  Classes include Hebrew Level 1 and 2, Introduction to Judaism, and various Torah study classes are ongoing.

Amidst all these wonderful celebrations, ongoing Shabbat services were attended by many, and of special note are all the life-cycle celebrations shared in our synagogue including:

Baby Namings: Jonah Wexler (Seth and Rene), Maya Eley (Michelle and Tim), The Lieberman Triplets and Garrison, (Phillip and Elizabeth), Elaina Cohen (Evan & Marcaux), Brendan Lederer (Cindy & Joseph)

Bar/ Bat Mitzvahs: Caitlin Whalen, Jeffrey Gluck, Michael Fried, Mark Wilson and Jeremy Wilson

Auf-Rufs: Beth and Dan Chehebar, Kim and Gregory Adler, Rosane and Neil Rathgeb, Faith and Jonathan Williams, Rachel and Joseph English.

Conversions: Stephanie Tallerie and Patrice Bye.

These special times could not have happened without your support and generosity. As always your financial contributions go a long way.  As we have no formal dues structure, we rely on your generosity.  Plans for the upcoming year already include the same wonderful events enjoyed last year, and in addition will include the celebration of Sukkos, including the building of a Sukkah, a benefit golf tournament, guest lectures, movie nights, museum trips, and many other wonderful celebrations of our Jewish lives and heritage.  I urge everyone to make a commitment to our synagogue and its future.  A monthly pledge of as little as $18 (less than a day at the movies) will allow us to continue to grow and offer the programs and activities that better serve you and your family.  Have a great summer!

What a year it has been...

What a year it will be!

Respectfully, Alec M. Messeroff

From the Rabbi’s Desk…

I trust that all of you are enjoying the summer and are looking forward to the coming Synagogue year with anticipation.

In addition to looking forward, I would also encourage you to look inward.  The time before the High Holidays has traditionally been a time for introspection and self-discovery - a time for a spiritual inventory.  I believe that our spirituality as Jews is rooted in our interaction with the world around us.  To be Jewish... is to do Jewish.  As a tool to assist us in this, I would urge you to pick up a copy of Rabbi Joseph Telushkin's "Book of Jewish Values".  It is perhaps the best guide I have found for what I call Practical Judaism.

Rabbi Teluskin's book contains an entry for each day of the year. It contains

paragraphs which discuss topics that range from the destructiveness of gossip, to when (if ever) it is permitted to lie, to what we should do as Jews when we hear the siren of an ambulance or fire truck.  Rabbi Telushkin has the gift of being able to write on ethics, Judaism and spirituality in an interesting and lively style.

Do yourself, a friend, or a family member a favor and pick up a copy.  I would particularly suggest using the various entries as a basis for discussion around the Shabbos table.  Try it and let me know how it works for you.

Regarding the upcoming High Holidays, I know that our Board would very much appreciate it if you could send your registration forms as soon as possible to avoid disappointment, as once again seating will be limited.  Also, if you would like to honor the memory of a loved one, by having

a hand cast bronze plaque mounted on our memorial board in time for the Yom Kippur Yizkor Service, it is necessary that it be ordered by no later then July 20th.

Our new season will begin on August 18, when we will call Jonathan Lee to the Torah as a Bar Mitzvah.

Many exciting events for the upcoming year have been planned, including very special and innovative Services for the first Friday of each month, beginning in October.  Please plan to join us on the first Friday of each month or any Saturday morning, for Shabbos Services. Bring a friend and let them experience and enjoy the warmth and spirituality of a Congregation Amchah Shabbos.

In the meantime, be well, enjoy the summer, and may G-d bless you.

                     Rabbi Larry Winer
