About Rabbi Larry Winer

Rabbi Larry Winer and his wife, Becky, known for their warmth and good humor are originally from Northwest Indiana and have been Florida residents since arriving in Fort Lauderdale aboard their sailboat in 1991.

After participating in various family businesses, at the age of 48, Rabbi Winer was able to realize a childhood dream of a career in the rabbinate with his acceptance for admission to the Rabbinical Seminary International and after the prescribed course of study earned his S’micha (rabbinic ordination) in 1994 from that institution.

Rabbi Winer with Becky founded Congregation Amchah in Fort Lauderdale, Florida in 1995 and have served that Congregation in the years since.   In 2001 he was invited to take part in a program in Advanced Rabbinic Studies offered by The Rabbinic Academy - Mesifta Adath Wolkowisk and received a certificate of S’micha from the Mesifta in November 2003.

In addition to his pulpit duties, Rabbi Winer also served as a Police Chaplain with the City of Oakland Park Florida’s Police Department from January, 1997 until the summer of the year 2000 when the City of Oakland Park contracted with The Broward County Sheriff’s office for its law enforcement services.

In the Spring of 2001 He was invited by Major Robert Morgan (Ret) and Chaplain Bill Pawson of the Miramar Florida Police Department to assist that agency in the formation of their Police Chaplaincy Unit.  Rabbi Winer currently serves the Miramar Florida Police Department 20 -30 hours a month as Senior Police Chaplain and rides regularly with Road Patrol Officers as an active police chaplain

He is a member of the International Conference of Police Chaplains (www.icpc4cops.org) and serves that organization as the Regional Director for the State of Florida.  Rabbi Winer holds Senior Level Training Credentials from the ICPC and has Certificates in Pastoral Crisis Intervention and Critical Incident Stress Management.  He is also a founding member of the Interfaith Clergy Group of Miramar, Florida.
